A Foreword To Frosh:

In addition to being explicitly countercultural (and sounding totally badass), MIT2D is a theme built around concepts relevant to you and your studies here in the Media, Information and Technoculture program (MIT) in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS).

Why "two" D? (Don't answer out loud, it was rhetorical.) So much of our modern world is 2D (including the screen you're reading this on) and it's useful to remind ourselves of it. There's been so much hype lately about 3D "stuff" and it's used to sell everything from movies to toothpaste. Look at your hand, that's 3D with no glasses required—awesome, eh?

Don't get us wrong, we aren't here to knock technology. We live and breathe the new and the cool (even 3D movies), but here in MIT we refuse to blindly accept every cool new shiny thing without taking a look at how it shapes our society and (techno)culture.

MIT2D is more than just a critique of "3D". With this theme we're bringing it back to the basics, and recognizing how the obsession with "progression" impacts our lives. Maybe we'll even find out why people choose to line up for the new iSomething instead of noticing real world social problems.

Welcome home MIT/MTP/MPI students, I already love you.

Mitchell Sturm, MIT Head Soph

What is MIT2D?: As MIT students, we are encouraged to explore the true meaning behind the trends in culture and how they shape our lives. Although we must admit, we are attracted to the 3D experience and the flashy technology that accompanies it, we must take a step back and understand how it affects our society. The theme MIT 2D challenges us to not hide behind the 3D lens, and encourages us to use a critical eye to explore its impact.

What is MIT2D?: In a time when seeing the world in three dimensions costs a little bit extra; a time when mere hype is disguised as the sublime of our generation; one faculty takes a stand. In 2011 & 2012, MIT, MTP, and MPI will defend the foundations of the omnipresent existence that is media. MIT2D fights for 2D in a 3D world.
